Patrol Operations

On January 20, 2023, PNPA Cadets assigned to BCPO underwent a lecture on Patrol Operations focusing on the practices or techniques that the city police office employs in maintaining peace and order in the city. Relatedly, it is the duty of law enforcement officers to investigate and analyze the operational area in order to implement the most effective operational strategies to attain its objectives in the maintenance of peace and order, public safety, and the general welfare of the community.

[1]As stated in The Philippine National Police Manual-Managing Patrol Operations Manual Chapter 1, “Patrol is the act of moving about in an area especially by authorized and trained persons usually police officers for the purpose of observation, inspection, collaboration, prevention of crime, and provision of a secure environment. Patrol Operation- the basic police function- forms the backbone of policing. This type of police operation is conducted to deny opportunities to commit crimes, and reduce the risk of citizens becoming crime victims. Likewise, the deployment of police patrols must be done in a systematic manner. Every operational procedure must be properly defined, executed, communicated, and recorded. Crime prevention managers must be guided with the standard procedures to harmonize and synergize all the resources available in order to maximize the impact to the community.” PNPMMPO (2015)

Patrol operations are an essential aspect of modern policing and security. They serve several key purposes:

  1. Community engagement: Police officers can inhibit criminal activity and stop crimes from happening by routinely monitoring their respective AOR. Simply having them around can increase security and deter potential thieves from acting.

  2. Responding to emergencies: Patrol officers are frequently the first to arrive at scenes of accidents, ongoing crimes, or natural disasters. They are qualified to evaluate the circumstance and take the necessary steps to guarantee public safety.

  3. Gathering intelligence: During patrol operations, police officers can gather valuable information about the community and its residents.

  4. Maintaining order: Patrolling helps keep the peace and make sure that the law and rules are being obeyed. Police personnel can respond to chaos and disruptions,

With the above reference, it is mandated for every police officer to embody and implement their sworn duties and responsibilities, protecting and serving the community with the utmost willingness. The lecture also enlightened us that the PNP Organization has its unique system of maintaining peace and order, especially in its respective areas of responsibility. Applying the most applicable strategies and techniques suitable for the community.

Henceforth, the session with PLtCol Gambican helped us understand and appreciate the Operation Sections in every Police Station. Overall, patrol operations are essential for upholding law and order, preventing crime, and fostering goodwill between the police and the people.
