“Great acts are made up of small deeds.”

On January 19, 2023, a senior citizen had a head injury that caused dizziness and fainting. Fortunately, a nearby guard saw the incident and reported it to BCPO-Compac 3, which brought about a prompt response and assistance.

This occurrence emphasizes Lao Tzu’s quote of many “Great acts are made up of small deeds.” With the guard's prompt assistance, we were also able to continue the cycle of service and empathy. As future bearers of public safety, we must realize and imply in our lives that any type of deed, maybe minor or not, is still impactful for everyone’s lives. Compassion and empathy for fellow humans are essential for effective law enforcement personnel. Officers unable to treat those they serve with kindness and respect become counterproductive and foreseeably a liability to the organization.

[1]"Kindness builds connection and connection builds community, and with community comes togetherness, which turns to community perseverance." GH (2021). One of the most significant benefits of performing acts of kindness is that it has a positive impact on the giver as well. When we do something nice for someone else, it releases feel-good chemicals in our brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, which help us feel happy and fulfilled. This, in turn, can boost our self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being.

By maintaining attentiveness to needs and empathy and understanding that small things can make a big difference, we, as future PNP officers, would be able to truly serve the people with our utmost abilities. Doing so also boosts our morale and well-being, which is crucial to every PNP officer. As future public safety officers, we feel transformed in this state of being and believe we can help change the world. We impact others to be kind by achieving small acts of kindness, creating an unending stream of consequences, a loop of kindness and service.

Empathy and compassion are undoubtedly essential to us as individuals, especially as future public safety officers. Regardless of rank, law enforcement members must ensure that they maintain and enhance their empathy and respect for the populations they serve. Not only will we, future PNP officers and employees, become more reliable and resilient, but the entire Philippine National Police will also become more efficient. Furthermore, a more harmonious and connected community is another advantage of random acts of kindness. By lending a hand to others, we show that we are all in this together and that each of us can make a difference in the world. This sense of connection and belonging can increase understanding, lessen disputes, and bring people together.

All in all, by choosing to practice small acts of kindness still, we exemplify what it really means to serve and protect our community.
